The Native European Muslims Assembly (NEMA) was founded in 2007 to support new Muslims in Europe by coordinating and enhancing the ongoing activities for new Muslims in all 28 countries that are members of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE).
The first step was data collection. NEMA was keen on getting accurate information about ongoing activities with European converts, so a questionnaire was prepared and sent to all relevant organisations addressing the main challenges and opportunities associated with converts. The questionnaire results indicated that a lot of effort is needed to enhance the current work with new Muslims in Europe.
The second step was data verification. NEMA organised a number of meetings and a workshops involving representatives from different European organisations to verifying the data collected from the questionnaire and to introduce their work with new Muslims and highlight potential areas for cross-European cooperation. These meetings also aimed to develop a plan for a European-based work with new Muslims. In February 2010 NEMA was established as a separate non-member organization linked to FIOE.
